Car insurance, pictures and events

Post by Scott »

This is a PSA for anyone at our events that has their car registered and insured for the street. I am currently having difficulty with State Farm insuring my retired red Miata (which spends most of it's time garaged under a cover) as an antique because it was used for "racing". It seems insurance companies are starting to go through social media as well as this forum and our posted pictures here of events to look at license plate numbers to see exactly what we are doing with our cars. Also it seems that one of our members (Eddie) is an adjuster for State Farm who has been involved with denying the coverage of my car (which is interesting since I am sure he races with us in his insured car.....), so beware we are being watched and the information shared......

Basically by taking pictures we are all putting ourselves at risk of being dropped by our insurance compaines.

I've had this discussion with both a state farm agent and a farm bureau agent. In most insurance agreements, there is a clause which states that any damage caused or received during any type of racing event is not covered under the policy. I dont know why they wouldn't cover a vehicle otherwise.

I'm just passing on what I was told. It wasn't the agent but the adjuster. My insurance was dropped because the adjuster "had personally seen my car used for racing". Talk about a double standard, I would love to know who this person is and talk to them personally.

The best part is one of our members who races with us, is the one canceling my insurance. Keep in mind I wasn't making a claim (or ever have for that matter) I had just updated my registration to antique since that is how the car is now registered.

Ironically my family just got dropped by State Farm (after being customers for well over 10 years!)... not specifically citing racing as I've only had one moving violation when I wrecked my civic, but something to ponder!

On another note, whoever that was, maybe they were bitter after always watching your taillights! ;)

From a fellow member reporting and cancelling insurance on fellow members...C'MON MAN!

Simply remove your tags from your vehicle during the event....just dont drive to get food!

WOW............... a member that is racing, going to deny insurance coverage... that's kind of ironic. I will be taping my tags over with blue tape for all of my insured street cars. I work hard not to race on the street and keep a good driving record and wouldn't dream of turning in autocross damage to an insurance company..........

That is the worst part..... I really wish my agent would tell me his name. I've had State Farm for 18 years and I've never made a claim (with the exception of 1 windshield on an Accord years ago....) and no moving violations, plus I have multiple cars, 2 trailers and home owners with them. My agent is shocked that this is even an issue (he used to autcross himself in the 70's....). The best part is the adjuster pulled a photo claiming it was from 10/15 that he used to drop the car, but the picture was clearly in a PCA album taken 6/14 and clearly shows the car with license plates that expire 1/15........

If I was dumb enough to file a claim for something that happened at an autocross, that is a completely other story and dropping me for even trying would be reasonable.

Might be hard to stick on aluminum license plates. A frame of ferrous metal would help.

Just buy a license plate cover and put stickers on it and bolt it on when you go to an event. I can order a whole bunch at work if anyone is interested.

I dropped my coverage with State Farm a few years ago, because they kept raising my rates despite no accidents. Your only recourse is to look thru your policy, and then decide if you want to take it to court, or take your business elsewhere. Court is probably the only way you'd get the individuals name. From everything I understood you're not covered for incidents arising from motorsporting events but that shouldn't cancel your policy.
