Truck tire recommendations

Post by glenthompson »

Sometime in the next couple of months I'm going to need better tires for the F250 pickup I bought. It currently has Firestone Steeltex A/T tires on it, 2 worn out and 2 fairly new. While I hate to get rid of tires early, they pretty much suck, especially in the rain.

Anybody have any suggestions for good replacements? I'd like something comfortable on the highway, decent in rain and snow, and durable enough for towing.

Looking at Tire Rack's suggestions, the Yoko Geolander G051 and G053 look like possibilities. Current tires are load range E but truck specs say D is ok. I don't plan on getting too close to max weight anytime soon - An open trailer and Miata only weight so much.

TIA

I have Michelin LTX A/T's on the Ranger. They have been good in foul weather and have a decent ride. They still look new after 25K miles.

Up at King TIre we sell a ton of the Kumho Ventura A/T tires. I beleive they have increased ply's for higher load ranges.

Also has a good "street" tread to keep the tire noise to a minimum.

We also sell a good amount of the Michelin LTX M/S & Michelin LTX A/S like you mentioned but they are about 2x-3x the price depending on what size you are looking for.

I can try and get you a deal if you want Glen. Give me a call 540-557-seven-seven-nine-zero.

The Yok Geolandar H/T-S (G051) is a very good tire. I can't comment from first hand experience, but I hear good things. The G053 is basically only offered in Load Range E fitments, but similar tread pattern. The G053 is not made in Salem, however the G051 is.

What size are you looking for?

Load Range 'E' will be slightly stiffer than 'D', but I would get them anyway just for those "what if I need to haul 2,000 lbs of quickrete" projects. And I agree with Ryan Geolandar h/t-s is the way to go. There is also an a/t-s that is a little more aggressive but also a popular tire. I have Michelin's on my Ram and I love them, but I am not going to pay $1,000 for replacements. They ride great, but are way to soft in the sidewalls and any curb rash will gash the sides really bad. Basically if you run over a twig in the road, it will cut the sidewall.
