After a couple years of talking about it and then having someone "borrow" my project, here is the latest addition to my Miata fleet:

Where and when in October are you working on your Comp license? Is it a NASA or SCCA event?

Scott, I was an instructor for NASA two weeks ago at SP. They had a couple of prospective comp drivers running with us for the Comp evaluation. Seemed pretty straightforward, they had a couple of "side by side" and "lead/follow"exercises, plus some classroom stuff and general track time.

Do you have a HANS or Hutchens or similar? That's mandatory for NASA racing.

Good luck (and have fun).

I do have a HANS, I've actually been wearing it the last couple of years while doing track days.

I had more fun this weekend than i think I have ever had before at Comp school. First off, mine was a little different than the other students. For the drills, everyone got placed with another student to be with on track, but I was luckly student #7 (the odd man out), so I got placed with an experienced SM racer. This was good and bad, while the orher students where going through the motions with each other, I was being challenged hard by the racer, squeezing me in the turns (i had 2 wheels off several times in turns). I also have known another SM racer for a couple years (he does racecar graphics, and I got mine from him), so even in my warm up sessions, the 2 SM racers would be door to door to me in the turns, and just put pressure on me everywhere around the track. At first, it was as little overwelming, esp. on Sat morning at 8am, when they started doing this on the first session out. But I got with it quickly, and because of these 2 guys, I feel that I had a much better school experience than anyone else, and I felt ready once I got the ok to race Sunday. In my first race I started dead last in my group, finishing 26th overall, out of 41, and 18th in Spec Miata out of 28. My goal for the weekend was to pass the school, and to stay clean in my first race.

Sounds like your school went well, you obviously have the speed. I like the NASA style of comp training, running close with other cars. Doesn't always work out that way at SCCA schools. On the other hand, it seems we have more cars in the SM run groups in SCCA, so there's more cars to race with (and they will accept your NASA license).

My SM is at Euro-Specialty straightening the many and considerable kinks, but we'll be ready to roll for March Memories in 2009. Hope to see you there.
