I figured you all may have some good ideas.
My friend and I want to go on a road trip after final exams this semester. I'm thinking a good "final destination" would be Deal's Gap, NC. I went to the Miata meet this summer there and had a blast, great roads that way.
Unfortunately, when I went before, I took I-81 the entire way down It wasn't the most fun that could be had with a Miata. Just curious if anyone knows of good routes down that way that don't involve a ton of I-81-style driving. More curves would be fun.
We'd be leaving from Harrisonburg, somewhere around December 12th.

Well if you want to make it a serious drive (>12hrs) you can get on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Waynesboro and take it all the way to Cherokee, NC, then US19 to NC28 to US129.

The Parkway is a great road and great scenery, but it is 45 MPH all the way, and being a Federal Parkway, you really do not want to get a ticket.
I would not have any specific recommendations, but suggest using Google or Mapquest and to find long cuts around the Interstate.

Once you get to the Roanoke area take US-221 and US-58 through Floyd, Hillsville, Galax. If you want to start on the NC side first, head towards Jefferson NS, then towards Boone.
If you want to, you can take US221 to just east of Asheville.
When truck traffic on is horrible, I usually take US-11 most of the way from Greenville to Roanoke. Not many other options on that route except the parkway.
