2012 Season: Proposed Schedule UPDATED

This post updated 01MAR

Note: April 15th at Salem has been moved to the 22nd and is still at salem.

All,

The following schedule is being presented to the members of BRR for comment:

-March 17 - 18 Verona test and tune / Points 1

-April 22 Salem Points 2

-May 20 Verona Points 3

-June 16 -17 Points 4 & 5 at VT

-July 21 - 22 VT Commonwealth Games / VAC Points 6 & 7

-August 12 Verona Points 8

-September 29-30 Verona College Challenge (Sat)/ VMSC Challenge (Sun) Points 9&10

-October 28 Salem Charity Event

I am aware that the 22nd of April is the second day of the super-shootout, but given the distance between the two events I find it unlikely that many people will need to choose between one or the other. If you will be headed to the Shootout, make BRR proud!

In addition, the VT events appear to be a go. The construction as it stands at this point does not look like it will have much of an effect on our event, except for the viewing-area, which can be dealt with.

-May 5 - 6 Verona Rookie School/Points 3 ( not decided on Rookie School )

-June 16 -17 Points 4 & 5 at VT

-July 4 Verona Points 6 and possible Picnic

-July 21 - 22 VT Commonwealth Games / VAC Points 7 & 8

-August 12 Verona Points 9

-September 16 Verona College Challenge Points 10

-October 7 Verona VMSC Challenge Points 11

-October 28 Salem Charity Event

Please keep in mind that Salem events are very subject to lot availability and may change accordingly. Also, note the July 4th date. The B.O.D. and I are interested in what the membership thinks of an event both on a Wednesday, and a holiday.

Any and all input is welcome.
so far i see no conflicts, it will also be interesting to see who could come on a holiday on that wednesday. i also noticed no danville events? in my travels this week i noticed a large lot that the danville harbour freight tools is located in and didnt seem to be used by anyone. someone may want to look into that if we want to have an event in danville.

I'm good for:
March 17-18
June 16-17
July 21-22

The two day events are all I can really do that far south. One day isn't enough to justify a hotel and travel unless I'm desperately needing some seat time to work out a thing or two in the kart.

It appears that the Commonwealth Games will be at VT???

Why no Danville events?

Not sure about the July 4th event, but I will of course be at all others...ha

6 events at Verona...we really need to pursue the airport outside Rural Retreat and Pulaski High School Parking lot..I gave that information to Jane some time back. When Verona goes away, we need another option.

I asked Verona about July 1, July 4, or July 8 so we can have some flexibility there.

The airport near Rural Retreat is Mountain Empire airport. The square area at the end is about 400 X 400. I don't think we'll be able to run on the active runway. The biggest lot I see at Pulaski High School is about 450 X 350.

For some perspective the "square" part of Verona is about 450X550 attached to 90X300 behind the pavilion. The lot at VT is 900X500. We need at least 100 ft from the finish to the paddock entrance. The minimum distance between slalom gates is 45 ft (but most of the time we make them 60ft) A typical 4 cone slalom takes up over 200 feet. Given that, the lots You mention are borderline at best. I'm all for different venues, but we still need to put on a quality event.

It was my understanding that the lot at Pulaski High was used before, but maybe its not an option anymore. They do have a rather large parking area that is attached to the larger lot that would work for staging/pit. We managed to run an event at a Truck Stop around traffic before and only part of the VT lot can be used, so my thinking was more locations just in case we lose Verona.

Not sure, but I believe Mt. Empire is completely private so using the runway would be the only way to host an event there.

Currently working with the various venues to get them nailed down. Hopefully get March, April, and May done by the end of this month.

The way my schedule looks for the summer, a July 4th event might be pretty cool! Being July, that nice bit of shade the building provides will be quite nice!

Kinda random note, been looking at aerial maps in the area looking for some decent size lots, and I've found that looks interesting. At the intersection of Mountain View Church rd and the Lynchburg Salem Turnpike (221 / 460) Can't tell if it's actually a church or not, there's also a pretty good size lot at the areva plant a little East of Lynchburg, but I haven't driven past either of these places, so not sure if they tend to be busy every weekend or not...

are we still looking for lots? i had stumbled upon a lot that the danvilel harbour freight tools is located in and also the lot at hopkins lumber off of 221 in martinsville might be big enough and i might have a cpontact for that.

Yes , you are always looking for lots . thats 220 in Martinsville and I'm not sure what lot you are looking at , at Hopkins lumber , but I havent seen one that was anywhere near big enough or with decent enough pavement .

The only date that sucks for me is the Apr 15 date at Salem . The ProSolo is in Maryland that weekend and Triad Sports Car Club is doing their Novice/intermediate school and Danville Autocross that weekend . :(

Sorry to hear that, but look on the bright side: You have a choice of where you can race on a given weekend :)

Not really , I am in charge of the school and autocrosses at Triad . No choice there .

In response to questions about the lack of Danville events: While the airport is certainly a nice place to race, I think we can all agree that it is hardly central to our region, so the BOD have opted to try a schedule that has more events in Salem and Blacksburg to reduce travel and lodging demands on the members of BRR.
Not trying to sound like complaining but there are 4 weekends/6 days at Verona! At least one single day in Danville would be nice.

Also , it will probably hurt the attendance of the Salem event , with a School and Autocross just an hour away plus the ProSolo just 4 hours away .

although i do like the lot at verona it is the furthest events i have to drive to. i love running at danville and it is a half hour less of a drive from verona for me since i live right on the franklin county line but i understand why we opted out of trying to hold events there. trying to have more events in salem and at virginia tech are good for me since they are closer. so good call on more events at VT and salem. verona is also close to alot of folks in BRR-SCCA from the stuarts draft, fishersville, charlotsville, and verona area. overall i think they schedule is spread out fairly well with several events in salem and VT and then events in Verona. everyone is going to have to do some driving to the events no matter where the events are.

just my 2 cents on the subject.

Yeah, that's cool with Danville. I'm excited for those Virginia Tech events though, loved that huge lot! I wish we had a lot that nice n' big at LU...

Anyways, great job Henry in arranging the events!

If we do move the commonwealth games..give me a heads up as early as possible. I will need to book a room and make trailer arrangements for Friday delivery. I am on vacation 16 thru 20 of that week. I will be glad to drive down Friday night, but I will need to leave early from vacation to get there....the sooner a decision is made, the better for me.

I know I'm one of the "local's" to the Verona lot, but it's hard to beat "real" bathrooms (with heat and air) and a great covered viewing area........

+1 for having a real sink to wash your hands in after using the bathroom!
There's also the availability of the lot and cheap rental fee. Given the uncertainties of Salem (Kenny Rogers had sore throat last month so we rebooked his concert during your event weekend...sorry) , summer only use of the VT lot and noncentral location of Danville (I like it but was going to skip this year due to hotel and traveling expenses). You all did a good job of scheduling with what you have.

As always keep on the lookout for good lots but keep in mind safety and size...I just don't want the BRR to pop up on youtube when you search "Autox accident".

Did you know that the main link from the home page for "Schedule" still shows 2011? Any chance to get it updated to be for 2012?
