I will soon be taking an extended break from autocrossing and was curious if I don't renew my membership every year, if I can keep my current member number when I reactivate it when I return? Or would I need to renew every year to keep it? May sound like a silly question, but just curious.

Not sure about the member number Ryan, but I do know from experience that you loose your continuity of membership, for whatever that is worth.
I joined SCCA initially in Gulf Coast region in '55 or '56 while a USAF pilot at Tyndall AFB, FL and kept it up through dental school when WV was part of Washington DC region, then So WV region when it was formed, then Mardi Gras (?) or whatever the New Orleans region was while an intern there.
Next assignment was in Puerto Rico which had no SCCA presence then so I dropped out. Though SCCA sent me some stuff as a 25 year member of BRR, the years from '56 to '64 did not count due to the lapse from '64 to '81. No big deal of course.
